However, I will like us to go the Simon Sinek’s way, by starting with ‘WHY’, then to the ‘WHAT’, and of course, to out topic – How to overcome limiting beliefs.

Is this a good thing to do, guys?

I suppose you’d say a resounding “YES”!

Let’s dive into it then.

Why do you need to Overcome Limiting Beliefs?

According to Lea Seigen Shinraku, limiting beliefs crushes our most fundamental need, the need to belong.

And based on considerable amount of research, I’ve come to realize that people begin to think negative-worried-fearful thoughts which oftentimes is premised on the fact that they think or feel they are not love or appreciated by the people around them.

Hence, if you will ever live a purposeful, happy, and vibrant life, you will need to do all you can to eliminate and overcome limiting beliefs that tries to steal your joy, self-confidence, and creative prowess.

Like it or not, every human have belief systems…

…it’s either your belief system is positive or is negative.

Whatever it is, whether negative or positive, it has the power to shape your life and what you attract to yourself.

Ever heard of “Law of Attraction”?

In fact, I love the way the good book puts it when it said, “As a man thinks in his heart so is he.”

And Henry Ford also has this to say, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right”.

Whatever it is, be guided with this truth; positive beliefs elevates while negative beliefs demotes and limit ones creative ability, which then rubs off on their self-confidence.

So, what is a belief?

A belief is a set of principles that guides your thoughts, words and actions. They are responsible for your view of reality — whether good or bad.

A wise friend once said to me, “Bunmi, you believe whatever you spend time thinking, and as such, you become whatever you spend time believing.”

He was right.

After all said and done, we are all a product of our belief systems.

Show me what you believe and I will show you what you’d turn out to become in one or few years from now.

What are limiting beliefs?

Limiting beliefs are those which constrain us in some way. Just by believing them, we do not think, do or say the things that they inhibit. And in doing so we impoverish our lives.

We may have beliefs about rights, duties, abilities, permissions and so on. Limiting beliefs are often about our selves and our self-identity. The beliefs may also be about other people and the world in general.

In any case, they sadly limit us.

Examples of Limiting Beliefs

There are plethora limiting beliefs examples and I will share some of them with you in a bit.

However, I’d like to note that most of these statements disguised themselves as TRUE statement, whereas they are nothing but a demonic strategy to keep a person from living out the true meaning of their life.

Some of these example are, but not limited to;

  • I’m too old.
  • I’m too young.
  • I’m too poor
  • I lack money and resources.
  • I’m a loser
  • I’m not lucky
  • I’m too fat or too skinny
  • I’m too tall or too short.
  • I’m not smart enough.
  • I’m not popular enough.
  • I’m not connected enough.
  • Others are in my way.
  • There’s no hope for me in this world
  • You have to start big to be rich or successful in life.

Can you see that?

The above are not but self limiting thoughts that may be impeding you from living out your true potential.

But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.

Overcoming Limiting Beliefs Exercise

Guess what, guys, changing limiting beliefs is quite simple than you think…

…You only need to replace the “I’m not” to “I can” or “I am” or “I have”.

Overcome Limiting Beliefs

Why do we limit our beliefs?

Experience

A key way by which we form our beliefs is through our direct experiences. We act, something happens and we draw conclusions. Often such beliefs are helpful, but they can also be very limiting.

Particularly when we are young and have few experiences we may form false and limiting conclusions. Nature builds us this way to keep us out of harm’s way. We learn and build beliefs faster from harmful experiences. Sticking my finger on a hot stove hurts a lot so we believe all stoves are dangerous and never touch a stove again. If punching another child results in a sound beating we may henceforth believe ourselves weak.

Education

When forming our perceptions of the world, we cannot depend on experiences for everything. We hence read and listen to parents and teacher about how the world works and how to behave in it.

But our teachers are not always that well informed. We also learn from what peers tell us and are ‘infected’ by their beliefs, which may be very limiting.

Education is a double-edged sword as it tells you want is right and wrong, good and bad. It helps you survive and grow, but just because you were told something, you may never try things and so miss pleasant and useful experiences and knowledge.

Faulty logic

In decisions, we make ‘return on investment’ estimations and easily conclude that the investment of time, effort and money is insufficient, and that there is a low chance of success and high chance of failure. The return may even be negative as we are harmed in some way.

People make many decision errors, for example based on poor estimation of probabilities. We take a little data and generalize it to everything. We go on hunches that are based more on subconscious hopes and fears than on reality.

The word ‘because’ can be surprisingly hazardous. When we use it, it seems like we are using good reason, but this may not be so. We like to understand cause-and-effect and often do not challenge reasoning that uses the mechanisms of rational argument.

Excuse

One reason we use faulty logic and form limiting beliefs is to excuse ourselves from what we perceive to be our failures.

When we do something and it does not work, we often explain away our failure by forming and using beliefs which justify our actions and leave us blameless. But in doing so, we do not learn and may increasingly paint ourselves into a corner, limiting what we will think and do in the future.

Fear

Limiting beliefs are often fear-driven. Locking the belief in place is the fear that, if we go against the beliefs, deep needs will be harmed.

There is often a strong social component to our decisions and the thought of criticism, ridicule or rejection by others is enough to powerfully inhibit us. We also fear that we may be harmed in some way by others, and so avoid them or seek to appease them.

3 Mindset Hacks That Will Help You Overcome Limiting Beliefs Easily

Mindset Hack #1: Affirmations

Merriam Webster Dictionary defines affirmation as “having a positive assertion”.

This in a layman understanding simply mean making positive declarations or statements that if continued for a period of time, rubs off on your mind thereby forming new thought patterns that will inevitably change your life for the best.

So, if you are the type of person who thinks or believe that they might never amount to anything in life, it might be a good time to start professing new words such as, “I am getting better and better everyday.” or “I am going to become great no matter what life throws at me”.

The energy in these kind of utterances has the power to induce in you, some positive thoughts and self-belief, which would in turn help transform your life and that too remarkably.

“Affirmations are our mental vitamins, providing the supplementary positive thoughts we need to balance the barrage of negative events and thoughts we experience daily.” - Tia Walker Click To Tweet

Mindest Hack #2 – Focus on the ‘Why’ before the ‘How’ and the ‘What’

Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “If you know your why, you can endure almost any how”.

Is that right?

Very right!

You guys remember Simon Sinek?

In his book, “Start With Why”, he mentioned the importance of starting with and how great folks like Marthin Luther King Jnr, The Wright Brothers, and even Steve Jobs distinguished themselves from normal people by mastering the power of “WHY”.

A lot of the time, we focus too much on what we are doing, how well we are doing it, or how badly things have gotten…

…and most times, we find ourselves stuck not knowing what to do to outturn the situation.

At times like this, simply going back to the drawing board might just be the best option.

What is the drawing board?

Well in this case, your drawing board will be your big “WHY”.

To get a more deeper perspective about this, I will jump on Mikayla Colthirst-Reid‘s post on the 3 Proven Mindset Hacks for Easily Overcoming Limiting Beliefs. In fact, her post inspired this post you are reading. So, feel free to jump on her post when you are done with this one.

Mindset Hack #4 – Reprogram Your Brain

Reprograming your brain is one of the finest mindset hacks for overcoming limiting beliefs.

Reprogramming your mind has to do with a lot of things. I will share just four of them with you here.

#1. Being around supportive-positive people.

Well, I noticed that when I am with positive people, I behave and act more confidently.

Fela Durotoye once asked “Who gets your ear-time?”

You are a sum-total of the five people you hand around with.

Hence, you have to make sure you always try to handout with positive and highly supportive set of people if you are going to ever overcome limiting beliefs.

#2. Keeping records of the things you are grateful for.

Still Ringing, two comedy icons in Nigeria, said, “Gratitude is what makes you keep scaling higher altitudes. You can’t be grateful and not be joyful.”

Keeping records of the things that you are grateful for has a way of pumping up energy into you to act and do more. And when you do more, you achieve more.

And believe it or not, grateful people are joyful people. And joyful people are limitless!

#3. Ignoring negative-worried-fearful thoughts.

Is it possible not to think negatively?

Well, I’m not sure.

As humans, we have the natural tendency to think negative thoughts

We are constantly worried and fearful about so many things, even the least of things.

#4. Reciting positive and life transforming affirmations.

SimonSomlai has a really great post over at his great blog about how to effectively reprogram your brain to completely eliminate and overcome limiting beliefs.
